IBS and colonoscopy?

is a colonoscpy a common way to help diagnose IBS? I might have IBS and will be seeing a GI specialist next week. I'm not thrilled over the idea of a colonoscopy mainly because I don't do well with conscious sedation sedatives. a friend told me they will probably want to do it.
Answer:
Because IBS is inflammation of the bowels, causing a backlog so to speak, a colonoscopy becomes more of an eliminatory tool to rule out the possibility of a more sinister underlying problem. Many doctors are happy to say that bloatedness and gut-ache is down to IBS, but more and more specialists are ensuring that there is nothing else wrong first.

IBS is treatable with fibre and probiotics, along with a reduction in some foods which aggravate the system.
I have IBS, diagnosed based on symptoms. Before you agree to a colonoscopy, why don't you try diet changes and OTC products? In fact, that's probably what your doc is gonna recommend.
